The Deal You Made
Composed of Deus Ex Machina scraps.
Song: "Overboard" by Poets of the Fall
In theatre class, we were talking about an element called, "Deus Ex Machina", Latin for "the god in the machine". It's used to describe a concept in theatre when a seemingly hopeless situation is immediately turned right around and saved by an unlikely source. While this is a term that is used for the theatre, I thought it was a pretty good life lesson, too.
So for those of you that need some spoilers on the metaphor that this video is providing...it's basically saying we're all born to fly, but you ain't gonna fly with ease. That's just life. Things are gonna cut at your wings, burn at them, trample them...but that doesn't mean they can't still work. Nothing's always lost. I'm not gonna feed you the Mary Sunshine theory that things will work themselves at, because sometimes they just won't. Sometimes you just need to create that "deus ex machina" for yourself. So no matter how hopeless something seems, find a way to make it work, and find that unlikely source that will save you.
Disclaimer: The artist who made this film is an experienced pyro. All fires involved in this video were burned under controlled settings and with great precision. Special effects were used to make the actor appear closer to the fire than they were (no, we would never put Seb inches from a roaring blaze) and copious amounts of water were standing by at each location. The moral of the story: don't burn fire if you don't know what you're doing. And make sure not to catch your actors' heads on fire.
